Minister of Music Job Description

Principal Functions: The Minister of Music is responsible to the Senior Pastor for planning, coordinating, conducting, and evaluating the comprehensive music ministry of Ebenezer Baptist Church. This ministry includes, but is not limited to, directing the adult choirs; leading congregational singing during worship services; facilitating children choir, youth choir; and instrumental groups; and providing piano/organ accompaniment as needed.

 

Education and Skill Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree in Music is required; Master’s degree in Music or above preferred.

A minimum of 5 years of experience as a Minister of Music or Assistant Minister of Music.

Fluency in several genres of music, including Classical/Sacred/Contemporary Anthems, Hymns, Spirituals, Traditional and Contemporary Gospel, and CCM/Praise and Worship.

Ability to teach parts to choral ensembles from sheet music and by rote.

Demonstrated advanced piano and organ skills.

Working knowledge of appropriate vocal techniques for children and adults.

Possess substantive administrative skills, including organizing a music library, scheduling rehearsals for several ensembles, and successfully interacting within the church structure.
 

Responsibilities:

  • Direct the planning, coordination, operation, and evaluation of a comprehensive Music Ministry.
  • Coordinate the Church Music Ministry with the Church’s Calendar.
  • In consultation with the ensemble officers and Music Staff, prepare a Music Ministry Budget annually to be recommended to the church Finance Budget and Planning Committee.
  • Direct the Sanctuary Choir, Women’s Chorus and be available to assist the other ensemble directors.
  • Assist the Pastor in planning worship services of the church and be responsible for the selection of the music for worship.
  • Play for and select music for funerals and some weddings held at the church.
  • Supervise the work of all music leaders in the Music Ministry.
  • Be responsible for recruiting and training leaders for the Church Music Ministry.
  • Coordinate with the Pastor in selecting, training, and advising interns as section leaders, accompanists and staff musicians who serve in the church.
  • Plan and perform an Annual Musicale that includes all Music Ministry ensembles.
  • Coordinate the performance schedules of music groups and individuals in the worship services and special programs.
  • Supervise maintenance of and additions to music library and equipment, including music materials, supplies, instruments, and wardrobes.
  • Coordinate the training and use of instrumentalists and vocalists in the groups, as individuals or as guests.
  • Be a member of the Church Council which consists of all Church Auxiliary Leaders; and
  • Comply with all established church policies and procedures as well as all applicable federal and state laws.

 

Other Skills and Abilities

  • Must be competent in the use of Microsoft Word.
  • Must be competent in the use of music software (Sibelius, Finale, Garage Band, Smart Music etc.), proficiency preferred.
  • Must have the ability to listen effectively and to communicate clearly, both orally and in written form.
  • Must have the competence and confidence for public speaking.
  • Excellent time management and record keeping skills.

  • To minister, through God-centered worship services, rather than be entertainment driven,
  • To secure an adequate budget that will facilitate a comprehensive music ministry,
  • To employ a full-time visionary, energetic Minister of Music who has authority and responsibility for planning, implementing and evaluating a comprehensive, quality, worshipful music program of praise and thanksgiving to God,
  • To implement and maintain a graded choir program,
  • To provide quality experiences where music theory and vocal enhancements are integrated into the rehearsals,
  • To confirm a regular performing worship schedule for each musical ensemble/group, including regular and special services (ex. 5th Sunday Mission programs, other annual presentations),
  • To regularly provide energetic congregational and praise worship music,
  • To design a varied musical repertoire that includes a broad genre’ (spirituals, anthems, hymns, traditional and contemporary gospel, seasonal musical celebrations) accompanied by appropriate instruments, where applicable,
  • To provide a training/retraining laboratory which emphasizes musical and spiritual development for all musicians, including choir directors, soloists, song leaders, accompanists and other instrumentalists,
  • To develop an ongoing recruitment calendar for each musical group,
  • To continue and expand small group choral outreach for senior care and rehabilitation centers,
  • To organize a music advisory/outreach council to the Minister of Music that supports growth, programming and leadership evaluation.
